Wilhelm Gustloff: The Shipwreck Six Times Deadlier Than Titanic
June 8, 2026
Description
Wilhelm Gustloff shipwreck, the deadliest maritime disaster in history, was far deadlier than the Titanic.
During World War II, more than 10,000 people were aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff when it was sunk in the Baltic Sea.
On January 30, 1945, as the Red Army advanced through East Prussia, thousands of civilians, refugees, wounded soldiers, crew members, and military personnel were packed onto the German ship in a desperate attempt to reach western Germany.
But in the darkness of the Baltic Sea, the Soviet submarine S-13, commanded by Aleksandr Marinesko, fired three torpedoes at the Wilhelm Gustloff. The ship sank in less than an hour, and around 9,000 people lost their lives in the freezing water.
This forgotten World War II tragedy remains one of the most devastating ship disasters ever recorded — and nearly six times deadlier than the Titanic.
