Otto Günsche | Hitler Most Loyal Guard

Otto Günsche served as an SS adjutant close to Adolf Hitler during the final phase of the Nazi regime. His place in the Berlin bunker made him an important witness to the events surrounding Hitler’s death on 30 April 1945 and the subsequent burning of Hitler’s and Eva Braun’s bodies outside the Reich Chancellery. This short documentary follows the role of a subordinate whose proximity to the dictator later gave his recollections particular significance. Such testimony can help reconstruct a sequence of events, but it must be read alongside other accounts and the circumstances in which it was obtained. Günsche’s postwar story also involved Soviet captivity before his return to Germany. Claims that he simply escaped every form of imprisonment or legal scrutiny collapse distinct events into one slogan. The account is more useful when military service, interrogation, captivity and later civilian life are kept separate.
