Shinano: Yamato’s Giant Sister Sunk on Her First Voyage in WWII

Shinano was Yamato’s giant sister ship, a massive WWII aircraft carrier sunk by USS Archerfish on her first voyage.

Originally designed as a sister of the legendary battleship Yamato, Shinano was later converted into one of the largest aircraft carriers ever built by Imperial Japan.

At around 72,000 tons, she was seen as a floating fortress — heavily armored, secretive, and born from the desperate final years of World War II.

But in November 1944, during her very first voyage, Shinano crossed paths with the American submarine USS Archerfish.

Six torpedoes were fired.
Four found their mark.

Before Shinano could take part in a single battle, the largest aircraft carrier of her time sank into the dark waters of the Pacific, taking more than 1,400 lives with her.
