Description

SS John Burke was an American Liberty ship destroyed in one of the most shocking World War II explosions ever caught on camera.

During the Pacific War, the SS John Burke was carrying ammunition and military supplies to the Mindoro Campaign in the Philippines when it came under attack by Japanese kamikaze aircraft.

On December 28, 1944, a kamikaze plane struck the ammunition-loaded cargo ship. Moments after impact, the explosives inside the vessel ignited, creating a massive blast that completely destroyed the ship.

Everyone aboard the SS John Burke was killed.

The explosion was so powerful that nearby vessels were damaged by the shockwave, and the moment became one of the most haunting pieces of wartime footage recorded at sea.

This is the story behind the real WWII ship explosion captured on camera.
