About this photo essay

On October 24, 2003, three Concordes descended on London Heathrow to mark the end of commercial supersonic passenger travel. The last scheduled revenue flight arrived from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, closing an era that had begun in 1976. Hundreds of people gathered to watch aircraft whose slender white silhouettes had become a symbol of high-speed aviation.

At cruising speed, Concorde flew at roughly twice the speed of sound and could cross the Atlantic in about three and a half hours. For its passengers, the aircraft seemed to erase distance. For its operators, it was expensive to maintain and costly to fill. The fatal Air France crash of July 2000, the suspension of service that followed, and a weaker premium travel market after the September 11 attacks all added pressure. Air France had already ended its own Concorde passenger flights earlier in 2003.

The final British Airways flights were a carefully staged farewell, not an engineering failure in the sky. Concorde remained technically remarkable, but aging aircraft, limited routes, costly maintenance, and shrinking commercial justification made the program difficult to sustain. No direct successor entered airline service.

Three photographs in this album depict the October 2003 farewell at Heathrow. A fourth, separately dated November 26, 2003, shows the last flight of any Concorde, from Heathrow to Filton near Bristol. The distinction matters: the final paying passengers left Concorde in October, but the very last aircraft did not stop flying until the following month.

British Airways Concorde at London Heathrow Airport in the final month of commercial service

Concorde at Heathrow during the farewell period

The sleek delta wing and needle-shaped nose made Concorde instantly recognizable. Photographer Steve Elliott identifies this Heathrow scene with October 24, 2003, the date British Airways completed its last commercial Concorde service. The file’s technical timestamp is later, however, so the exact exposure day is not independently certain. Its value here is the unmistakable appearance of the aircraft at the end of an era.

The final scheduled Concorde flight from New York landing at London Heathrow on October 24 2003

The last commercial Concorde from New York arrives

A British Airways Concorde touches down at Heathrow after crossing the Atlantic from New York on October 24, 2003. The arrival brought the airline’s scheduled supersonic passenger service to a close. Other Concordes performed farewell flights that day, but this New York service was the defining final commercial crossing. The photographer’s own description identifies the event and location.

Concorde approaching Heathrow on October 24 2003 photographed from beneath its flight path

One of Concorde’s final approaches to Heathrow

Photographer Don Gilham recorded this aircraft near Heathrow on the very day British Airways retired its commercial Concorde flights. For the crowds watching, these low approaches were a chance to see a familiar shape that would soon disappear from the passenger timetable. The camera preserves the approaching airplane rather than a posed ceremony.

British Airways Concorde on its final noncommercial flight from Heathrow in November 2003

The final Concorde flight came one month later

A necessary distinction: commercial passenger service ended on October 24, but Concorde aircraft still flew afterward. This photograph documents the final flight of a Concorde on November 26, 2003, when the British Airways aircraft G-BOAF traveled from Heathrow to Filton, near Bristol, for preservation. It belongs at the end of this gallery as an epilogue, not as an image of the October commercial finale.
