The World’s Oldest Football Club: Sheffield FC, Founded in 1857
Period
Victorian era, 1857–1900
Place
Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England
On October 24, 1857, two Sheffield sportsmen founded a club that would help shape modern soccer. Historic team photographs and an early rulebook tell its story.
Football was played in Britain long before October 24, 1857. What changed that day in Sheffield was the creation of a club devoted to organizing it. Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest, both connected with the city’s sporting circles, founded Sheffield Football Club—a team still recognized as the world’s oldest surviving football club.
The early players did not follow the standard rules familiar to football supporters today. Different schools and towns had their own ways of playing. Sheffield’s members began writing down a set of laws in 1858, and a printed version followed in 1859. The club’s rules helped shape the emerging game, with innovations that would influence football far beyond Yorkshire.
On Boxing Day 1860, Sheffield FC met Hallam FC in a landmark interclub match. The Football Association would not be formed until 1863, and the modern game’s laws developed gradually as clubs negotiated which rules to adopt. Sheffield’s history belongs to that messy, inventive period before anyone could take the shape of a football match for granted.
No authenticated photograph of the club’s founding meeting is presented in this gallery. Instead, these are surviving records of the original rulebook, one founder and later generations of the team. One photograph long circulated as a Sheffield FC squad from 1857 has been shown to depict a different side; it has deliberately been excluded. The genuine pictures tell a more interesting story than a convenient but incorrect caption.

The Sheffield FC team in 1890
This is an authenticated late-Victorian team portrait of Sheffield Football Club, taken more than three decades after the club’s founding. That date matters. A different photograph long presented online as the Sheffield side of 1857 was later identified as a London representative team. The misleading image has been left out of this gallery.

The laws of Sheffield Football Club, printed in 1859
The surviving front page of Sheffield FC’s printed laws reveals that early football was not a single, settled game. Creswick, Prest and their fellow members formalized local rules in 1858; this printed edition appeared in 1859. It predates the Football Association’s original code of 1863 and preserves the club’s role in football’s early organization.

William Prest, one of Sheffield FC’s founders
William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick were central to establishing Sheffield FC on October 24, 1857. Prest was part of the circle that organized local football and helped develop the early Sheffield code. This is a historical likeness of the founder, not a photograph of the founding meeting; the exact date when the portrait was made is not reliably established.

Sheffield FC at the turn of the century
By 1900 Sheffield FC had been playing organized football for more than four decades. This later team photograph records a club that survived the rapid spread of league and professional football without becoming one of the nation’s wealthy giants. The 1900 scene illustrates the continuing institution, not the club’s earliest lineup.
