About this photo essay

The Great March crossed from Natal into the Transvaal on November 6, 1913. These six records place it among the campaign’s people and publications. Three are later educational filmstrip frames reproducing historical material; their captions and borders are retained and identified.

Topic: Civil Resistance

The column on the road

A historical photograph of the Great March appears in this later educational filmstrip preserved by the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya Samiti. The black surround and printed caption belong to that presentation. The underlying scene records the 1913 march; its exact day and camera position are not established by the catalog.

A later map of the route

This educational filmstrip maps the route from Newcastle toward Volksrust. It is a later explanatory graphic, not a map carried by the marchers. Its caption gives 75 children; the Mani Bhavan chronology gives 57. The article follows that chronology rather than silently repeating the figure printed on the slide.

The satyagrahi in a filmstrip portrait

A later educational slide reproduces Gandhi in the plain clothing associated with his identification with Indian laborers. Commons dates the underlying portrait to 1913. The image belongs to the campaign year, but the catalog does not establish that it was taken on November 6.

Gokhale visits Durban

Gandhi sits with Gopal Krishna Gokhale and supporters during the Indian political leader’s 1912 visit to South Africa. Gokhale hoped negotiations would secure relief. The failure to obtain a satisfactory settlement forms part of the background to the renewed resistance the following year.

The people behind the correspondence

This 1913 portrait brings Gandhi together with his secretary Sonia Schlesin and his friend Hermann Kallenbach. Meetings, letters, money and transport required sustained work away from the public procession. The photograph provides faces for that support network without pretending to show a planning meeting for one particular day.

A page of Indian Opinion with the newspaper masthead and densely printed columns.

Indian Opinion carries the news

The newspaper Indian Opinion gave the resistance a means of reporting events and arguing its case. This surviving page is cataloged to 1913 and carries the heading “A Week of Excitement.” The available scan is small; it is included as a newspaper artifact, without presenting its fine print as a legible transcript.
