Hindenburg

Description

On 6 May 1937, the German passenger airship Hindenburg caught fire while approaching its landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The disaster ended a transatlantic journey and became an enduring image of the risks associated with hydrogen-filled passenger airships. Its impact was amplified by photographs, newsreel footage and a radio reporter’s recorded reaction. This short documentary revisits the event and the way it entered public memory. The recordings are distinct historical sources: the presence of a familiar voice beside a moving image does not mean the audio and film were originally captured as one synchronized recording. The visible fire also does not, by itself, settle every question about ignition and the materials involved. Official investigations and technical studies address those questions more carefully than a single spectacular image can. The account follows the documented disaster while keeping the passengers, crew and people on the ground at the center of the story.
