Iran: A Cautionary History

Images of Tehran before the 1979 revolution often show a society very different from the one viewers expect. They can reveal fashions, cultural activity and the ambitions of Pahlavi-era modernization. They cannot, on their own, show how evenly those changes were experienced across Iran or what political restrictions existed alongside them.

This short documentary follows the contrast between modernization under the monarchy and the Islamic Republic that emerged from revolution. The transformation involved struggles over state authority, religion, social change and the position of women, rather than a single overnight change affecting every Iranian in the same way.

A longer view also includes Reza Shah’s rule and the political conflicts of the following decades. Historical photographs become more informative when their place, date and social setting are known. The account therefore avoids using selected scenes as proof that an entire country was uniformly free, prosperous or “more modern than Europe.”
