As thousands tried to flee Afghanistan, some Afghans chased a U.S. military cargo plane and clung to its landing gear.

In August 2021, after the Taliban entered Kabul, thousands rushed to Kabul Airport to escape Afghanistan.

One C-17 carried 823 Afghan civilians to safety. But others were not as lucky.

In one of the most tragic scenes ever recorded, people ran after another U.S. cargo plane. Some held on to the landing gear. After takeoff, people were seen falling from the sky.

These images became one of the most painful symbols of desperation in modern history.
