Vladimir Putin: Political Image and the Rise to Power

Vladimir Putin became acting president of Russia on 31 December 1999, when Boris Yeltsin announced his resignation. The transfer of authority came after Putin had already risen to the premiership. It was followed by the presidential election of 26 March 2000, a separate step in his move into the presidency. This short video introduces that transition and the political weight later attached to images of succession. A ceremony or meeting can become a symbol of a new era, but it should not collapse appointments, constitutional succession, an election and a subsequent inauguration into a single moment. Official records establish the dates, while election-observer reporting provides a different perspective on the electoral setting.
