The Radium Girls

Description

In the early twentieth century, luminous paint made watch and instrument dials readable in darkness. Some workers applied the paint using a method that involved shaping brush tips with their lips. When that paint contained radium, the practice created a route for radioactive material to enter the body. The women later known as the Radium Girls helped expose the gulf between assurances of safety and the injuries appearing among dial painters. Medical investigation, measurements of radioactivity and legal action gradually made an initially denied industrial danger visible. Their struggle was about evidence and accountability as well as suffering. This documentary follows that history without treating every factory, worker or legal case as identical. Radium’s behavior in the body explains why harm could continue after exposure had ended. Government and scientific records also show how the dial-painting cases contributed to the developing understanding of occupational radiation hazards. Historical context

The Radium Girls’ history connects luminous dial painting with evidence in breath and bone, a contested settlement, long research and contaminated factory sites.
