What Happened to Nazi Leaders’ Bodies After the Nuremberg Executions?

Description

The International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg ended with different outcomes for different defendants: imprisonment, acquittal and death sentences. Ten men were executed on 16 October 1946. Hermann Göring died by suicide before his sentence could be carried out, while Martin Bormann had been sentenced in his absence. This short documentary turns to what happened after those judgments. The disposal of the remains was intended to prevent individual graves from becoming places of Nazi commemoration. Cremation and the absence of marked burial sites formed part of that decision, linking the immediate aftermath of the trial to the longer struggle over public memory. The legal record remains more substantial than the final moments alone. Captured documents and testimony established responsibility for aggressive war, persecution and mass murder. Reading those records alongside the account of the executions keeps the focus on the crimes, the victims and the purpose of the proceedings.
