About this photo essay

On October 23, 1956, university students took to the streets of Budapest with demands that went far beyond campus politics. They wanted political freedom, Soviet troops out of Hungary, and a government that answered to Hungarians. The crowd grew into the tens of thousands. By nightfall, demonstrators had pulled down Stalin's towering statue, and shots were fired outside the state radio building.

What began as a protest had become a revolution. Hungarian soldiers and civilians joined the uprising, barricades appeared across the capital, and for a brief moment the country seemed capable of breaking free. A new government under Imre Nagy announced reforms and eventually declared that Hungary would leave the Warsaw Pact. Moscow responded with overwhelming force on November 4. Soviet tanks entered Budapest, the resistance was crushed, and thousands of Hungarians were killed or fled the country.

October 23 remains one of Hungary's most important national dates. The images in this album were taken during the 1956 uprising; where the precise day of a photograph is unknown, it is identified as such rather than passed off as a scene from the first demonstration.

People carrying Hungarian national flags along a rubble-strewn Budapest boulevard during the 1956 revolution

Hungarian flags carried through József Boulevard

People march beneath Hungarian flags on József körút, close to Nap utca, during the uprising of 1956. The flags and the damaged streets capture two sides of the same revolt: an unmistakable demand for independence and a capital already marked by fighting. The Fortepan archive dates this image to 1956 but does not establish that it was taken on October 23 itself.

Hungarian civilians walking near a makeshift street barricade on Fehérvári Road in Budapest in 1956

A barricade rises on Fehérvári Road

Civilians approach an improvised barricade on Fehérvári út, seen from the direction of Móricz Zsigmond körtér. Street fighting transformed ordinary junctions into defensive positions. Armed resistance did not characterize the peaceful student procession at the start of October 23; it developed as the uprising escalated. Fortepan supplies the year, not an exact day for this scene.

A Soviet tank confronts the streets of Budapest

A Soviet tank stands in a Budapest street amid the October 1956 revolt. Soviet forces entered the capital in the first days of the fighting, withdrew temporarily, then returned in strength on November 4 to destroy the revolution. The image is useful evidence of the armored intervention, but its precise day has not been verified from the surviving archival description.

Road barricades across Fehérvári Road in Budapest during the Hungarian uprising of 1956

The revolution left barriers across the tram streets

Barricades obstruct Fehérvári út near the entrance to Vásárhelyi Pál utca. The position was photographed from the Vályi utca side of Móricz Zsigmond körtér. It is one of several Fortepan views that show how quickly the street plan of Budapest became a map of resistance. The date is given as 1956, without a reliable day or month in the catalog entry.
