Kabul, August 2021
Documentary
Description
The Taliban’s entry into Kabul in August 2021 was followed by desperate attempts to leave Afghanistan through the airport. People gathered around military aircraft while an international evacuation expanded under rapidly changing conditions. The images became symbols of fear, uncertainty and the collapse of the previous government. This short documentary focuses on the runway scenes and the danger faced by those trying to escape. Different recordings from the airport should not be merged into one event. The crowded C-17 flight known as REACH 871 departed on 15 August; the fatal incident involving another C-17 the following day was a separate flight. Official reports and humanitarian records place the airport emergency within a wider displacement crisis that had begun before Kabul fell. The people visible on a runway were only part of that population. Careful dates and distinctions allow the account to acknowledge their desperation without attaching invented passenger identities or casualty totals to the footage.
