Former SS Guard Secretly Recorded | Franz Suchomel
Documentary
The story behind the film
Years after World War II, former Treblinka SS guard Franz Suchomel agreed to speak with French filmmaker Claude Lanzmann for the documentary Shoah. Believing his identity would remain concealed, Suchomel described the camp’s daily operation with disturbing calm—unaware that the interview was being secretly filmed. During the conversation, he also sang a marching song that prisoners at Treblinka had been forced to perform. Its almost cheerful melody stood in horrifying contrast to the reality of a camp where hundreds of thousands of people were murdered. This video examines the hidden recording, Suchomel’s role at Treblinka, and how mass killing was transformed into an ordinary routine by the men who helped operate the system.
