Former SS Guard Secretly Recorded | Franz Suchomel

Franz Suchomel had served at the Treblinka killing center. Decades later, Claude Lanzmann interviewed him while assembling the testimony that became Shoah. The surviving recording is an important example of a perpetrator speaking about the operation of a place created for mass murder. This short documentary focuses on the interview and Suchomel’s performance of a camp song. The disturbing nature of the material comes from its context: a former member of the staff recalling a system in which deported people were killed. The recording must be understood as testimony from an implicated participant, not as a neutral explanation of the camp. Lanzmann’s interview methods, the surviving footage and the museum catalog provide a route back to the source.
