Repeated electoral defeat does not always end a political career. This video compares opposition figures including Raila Odinga, Hakainde Hichilema, Ranil Wickremesinghe, Gennady Zyuganov and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Their experiences raise questions about party organization, leadership renewal and why supporters sometimes retain faith in a candidate after setbacks. The comparison is an editorial selection, not a verified worldwide league table. Presidential contests, parliamentary elections, local elections and internal party votes are different events. 0:12 In Kenya, Raila Odinga ran for president five different times.
0:17 Each time, he came close to power.
0:20 But that door never truly opened for him.
0:24 In Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema also lost five elections.
0:29 But his story ended differently.
0:31 On his sixth attempt, he finally became president.
0:35 In Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe became known for years as one of
0:40 the opposition's most prominent figures, despite repeated electoral defeats.
0:46 If local and regional elections are included, his total number of losses
0:50 reaches double digits.
0:53 In Russia, Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov spent years as one of
0:59 the most recognizable faces of the opposition.
1:02 When presidential and parliamentary elections are counted together, his number of defeats
1:07 rises to as many as 12.
1:10 But the story of the man at the very top of this
1:13 list is something else entirely.
1:16 Kemal Kilic Daroglu, the current leader of Turkey's main opposition.
1:21 If general elections, local elections, referendums and presidential runoff rounds are all
1:27 counted separately, Kilic Daroglu lost all 13 major elections he entered.
1:33 But the story didn't end there.
1:36 In 2023, he lost the leadership race within his own party.
1:41 His total number of defeats rose to 14, and his time as
1:46 party leader officially came to an end.
1:49 But Kilic Daroglu refused to walk away.
1:52 According to many people in Turkey's opposition, President Erdogan wanted his repeatedly
1:58 defeated rival back.
2:00 Why?
2:00 Because after Kilic Daroglu stepped aside, the opposition party won its first
2:05 major election in years by a landslide.
2:09 Kilic Daroglu then returned to power by working with the ruling establishment,
2:14 using the courts to overturn the very party leadership election he had
2:19 lost, putting him right back in position to potentially suffer a 15th
2:24 defeat.
2:25 So now, the question is this.
2:27 How can a 77-year-old politician, who has lost every major
2:32 election he entered, still remain the leader of the opposition?
