Hitler’s Private World

Description

Images of leisure inside Hitler’s circle can seem startling when placed beside the destruction associated with his regime. Surviving home movies and photographs show informal gatherings, holidays and life around the Berghof. Their apparent ordinariness is part of what makes them historically important, and potentially misleading when shown without context. This video examines the contrast between a private social world and a dictatorship responsible for persecution, aggressive war and genocide. A camera records a selected view. It does not show the full exercise of power, the people excluded from that space or the consequences of decisions made by those appearing in it. Archival catalogs and the documentation of Obersalzberg help explain how these records survive and what questions they can answer. Casual behavior cannot establish political innocence or erase responsibility. The useful question is how comfort and leisure could coexist with the violence that the same leadership organized elsewhere.
