The Last Voyage of SS John Burke

Description

SS John Burke was a merchant cargo ship carrying military supplies in the Philippines during the closing months of 1944. On 28 December, a Japanese suicide aircraft struck the ship while it was part of the effort to supply forces near Mindoro. Its ammunition cargo turned the strike into a catastrophic explosion. This video places the destruction of a single ship inside the logistics of the Pacific War. Landings depended on convoys delivering fuel, ammunition and other supplies, often through waters where ships and their crews remained exposed to air attack. A transport vessel was therefore part of the battle even when its work was carrying rather than firing weapons. Maritime and naval records provide the ship’s identity and operational setting. They allow the event to be understood beyond the scale of the explosion alone, with attention to the merchant mariners and armed personnel whose work sustained the campaign. Historical context

The SS John Burke dossier combines the surviving visual record with Historium’s documentary narrative, long-form article, and original score. It provides a single path through the ship’s story, the wartime context, and the human scale behind one of the conflict’s most striking filmed explosions.
