Che Guevara’s Final Hours

Che Guevara was captured by Bolivian forces on 8 October 1967 and taken to La Higuera. He was executed the following day while in custody. That basic chronology is more secure than every detail later attached to the encounter between Guevara and the man who shot him. This short documentary revisits the final episode of the Bolivian campaign and the statements attributed to Guevara before his death. Those words survive through witnesses, intelligence reporting and later interviews, rather than an authenticated recording of the execution itself. Wording and emphasis therefore need to be attributed to the account being used. Declassified documents place the killing within a wider history of Bolivian military operations, Cuban revolutionary ambitions and United States involvement in the Cold War. Keeping those contexts visible helps explain how a captured guerrilla became an enduring political symbol without turning the details of his final minutes into unquestionable legend.
