Description

Che Guevara’s 1965 Algeria speech marked one of the most controversial turning points of his life.
At the Afro-Asian Solidarity Conference in Algiers, Che openly criticized not only the United States, but also the Soviet Union — Cuba’s most important ally.

His words shocked Moscow and placed Fidel Castro in an impossible position. Cuba’s survival depended heavily on Soviet support, yet Che had accused the Soviets of behaving like imperial powers by trading with poorer nations on capitalist terms.

After returning to Havana, Che Guevara disappeared from public life. He resigned from his government positions, renounced his Cuban citizenship, and left behind the political office for the battlefield once again.

From Algeria to Congo, and finally to Bolivia, this speech became one of the key moments on the road that led Che Guevara toward his final days.
