Stella Kübler: Blonde Poison

Stella Kübler, also known as Stella Goldschlag, was a Jewish Berliner who became an informer for the Gestapo. Her case belongs to the history of people attempting to survive Nazi persecution and of the methods used to find Jews living in hiding. Those methods included coercing persecuted people into assisting their persecutors. This short documentary examines an individual story in which victimization and responsibility cannot be reduced to a simple label. Accounts of Kübler’s arrest and abuse are important context, but they do not erase the consequences for the people she helped identify. The record also requires caution about precise totals and sensational details repeated in later retellings. The focus is on persecution, betrayal and the choices available within an exceptionally violent system. Descriptions centered on beauty or a ranking of the “worst traitors” obscure more than they explain. Museum research and biographies of people in hiding provide a more serious route into the subject.
