Che Guevara’s 1965 Algiers Speech

Description

Speaking in Algiers in February 1965, Che Guevara argued that socialist countries had obligations toward poorer nations that went beyond ordinary commercial exchange. His criticism was striking because it challenged the behavior of states on which revolutionary Cuba depended, rather than directing every accusation at the United States. This short documentary focuses on the political meaning of that intervention. Guevara’s language expressed a demanding vision of international solidarity and a rejection of relationships he believed reproduced economic inequality. Reading the speech itself makes its argument clearer than treating it merely as a dramatic act of defiance. Guevara later left his public roles in Cuba, joined the Congo mission and eventually fought in Bolivia. Those developments belong to the subsequent chronology, but a sequence of events is not proof of a single cause. The description of the speech as the moment that “led to his death” should therefore be treated as an interpretation.
