Che Guevara in Congo

Description

In 1965, Che Guevara joined a Cuban mission supporting rebels in the Congo. He entered a conflict shaped by the country’s post-independence crisis, external intervention and divisions among local movements. The international revolution he hoped to advance depended on relationships and conditions that he could not simply command into existence. This video focuses on the failure of that mission. Problems of discipline, coordination, political connection and military support weakened the effort, and the Cuban contingent withdrew. Guevara later reflected on the experience as a failure, a perspective that is valuable but remains the account of one participant. The Congo should not appear only as a brief stop on the way to his death in Bolivia. Its political history and the aims of Congolese actors were central to what happened. Reading the mission through both regional conditions and Cold War intervention gives the episode a clearer meaning than a story built around one revolutionary’s disappointment.
