Che Guevara’s Road to Death: From Algiers to His Execution

Description

In 1965, Che Guevara challenged the economic behavior of socialist countries in a speech in Algiers. He later disappeared from public life in Cuba and joined an unsuccessful guerrilla mission in the Congo. His next major campaign took him to Bolivia, where he was captured in October 1967 and executed after being taken prisoner.

This longer documentary follows those connected episodes as a sequence of political choices, failed expectations and growing isolation. Guevara’s ambitions extended beyond Cuba, but local conditions, relationships with other movements and the balance of military power repeatedly frustrated those ambitions.

Speeches, correspondence and declassified records help separate that chronology from the legend that later surrounded his death. His criticism of allies in Algiers is part of the story; it is not sufficient evidence that one speech alone caused his execution. The final campaign needs to be understood through its own circumstances as well.
