Sarajevo Safari: The Allegations Behind the Film
Documentary
Description
During the siege of Sarajevo, civilians faced sniping and shelling while crossing streets, collecting water and carrying out ordinary tasks. International criminal proceedings established the campaign of terror directed against the city’s population. That documented history forms the background to the separate allegations often called “Sarajevo Safari.” Those allegations concern foreigners who allegedly traveled to positions around the city to shoot civilians, including claims that money changed hands. A documentary film, witness accounts and subsequent complaints have brought renewed attention to the subject. They should not be described as if every allegation had already been proven in court. This video introduces the claims while the accompanying research separates established findings, testimony and unresolved questions. The distinction protects the accuracy of the account and the dignity of victims. The siege’s documented crimes are grave in their own right; they do not require an unproven detail to make them matter.
