Documentary
Five Political Leaders Who Shaped the Twentieth Century
Documentary
Description
Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk confronted different political crises. This video brings them together as an editorial selection of influential leaders, rather than claiming that historical greatness can be measured by a single objective score. Their legacies involve struggles against apartheid and colonial rule, responses to depression and war, and the creation of new political institutions. The comparison becomes more useful when particular decisions are examined: Mandela’s presidency, Gandhi’s civil resistance, Roosevelt’s reforms, Churchill’s wartime leadership and Atatürk’s transformation of the Turkish state. Achievement does not remove the need to examine exclusion, coercion or contradictory decisions. Roosevelt’s record includes the mass removal and incarceration authorized by Executive Order 9066, while Churchill’s imperial commitments complicate his place in a story about freedom. The accompanying article treats comparison as a way to ask better questions about power and responsibility, not to declare an uncontested winner.
