A famous aircraft can acquire a biography that is simpler than its real service history. Richard Bong’s P-38 Lightning “Marge” is often treated as the inseparable companion of America’s leading fighter ace. Yet the aircraft’s last flight belonged to another pilot, and identifying its wreck required evidence that a familiar nickname could not provide.
The story connects several people and places: Bong and Marjorie Vattendahl, the aviator whose emergency ended the aircraft’s service, communities in Papua New Guinea, and researchers working decades later. Following those connections makes the wreck more historically valuable than a relic attached to a single celebrated name.
The pilot and the name
Bong was credited with 40 aerial victories during the Second World War. “Marge” referred to Marjorie Vattendahl, whom he later married. Her portrait became part of the aircraft’s appearance. He received the Medal of Honor in December 1944 and died during a P-80A test-flight accident on 6 August 1945. EAA’s account of a Bong family reunion summarises that personal history.
The portrait gives a military machine a personal association, but it should not make Marjorie merely a decorative footnote. Her name is one reason the aircraft remains recognisable. It connects a public image of wartime achievement with a relationship that existed beyond the cockpit. That is a different kind of evidence from a combat report, and it answers a different historical question.
One career, several aircraft
Pacific Wrecks’ inventory records that Bong flew multiple P-38s and that more than one aircraft carried the Marge name. The particular machine identified in Papua New Guinea was P-38J serial number 42-103993. The aircraft inventory distinguishes assignments and airframes. His career total must therefore not be described as 40 victories achieved in this single aircraft.
A serial number is less evocative than nose art, but it makes this distinction possible. Names can be repeated, photographs can become detached from captions, and an aircraft representing a celebrated pilot can be mistaken for the exact machine he flew. Keeping the airframe’s identity separate from the pilot’s reputation prevents several different histories from being compressed into one.
What kind of machine was it?
The P-38 began as a twin-engine interceptor and served in roles including escort, reconnaissance and ground attack. The J model introduced improvements to engine cooling, cockpit heating and fuel capacity over earlier versions. The National Museum of the United States Air Force explains the aircraft’s development.
These details place Marge within an evolving aircraft family. They also discourage a misleading way of reading an accident: a successful design is not a guarantee that every flight will end safely. Specifications describe intended capabilities. An operational history concerns particular machines, maintenance conditions, weather and decisions made during actual flights. Confusing those levels can make an emergency seem inexplicable when it is better approached through its own evidence.
Thomas Malone’s last flight in Marge
On 24 March 1944, Thomas E. Malone flew Marge from Nadzab on weather reconnaissance. Mechanical and electrical problems developed amid bad weather; the aircraft entered a spin, and Malone bailed out. Bong was not the pilot in that crash. Naming Malone restores the person who faced the emergency and separates the aircraft’s loss from Bong’s later death. The distinction also changes what a viewer should imagine when looking at the wreck: this was the site of an aircraft’s destruction, but the man flying it escaped. A dramatic retelling should not manufacture a fatal ending that the record does not contain.
Identification in 2024
Pacific Wrecks reports that its team surveyed the crash site in May 2024 and identified markings including “993” on a wingtip, together with evidence consistent with the aircraft model. Its account records no surviving trace of the famous portrait or nickname. The detailed airframe record explains the identification.
That is an instructive reversal. The most recognisable feature in public memory was not the decisive evidence at the site. Less conspicuous production and identification markings made the connection possible. A wreck may look anonymous while retaining precisely the information needed to distinguish it from another aircraft.
The Bong Center’s project account also credits contact with local landowners who knew of potential crash sites and describes cooperation with Papua New Guinea’s National Museum and Art Gallery. Its Mission Marge history records that collaborative work. Discovery here means establishing a documented identity through shared knowledge, not claiming that a place was unknown to everyone before outside researchers arrived.
A dated continuation in 2026
On 24 July 2026, Wisconsin’s Department of Military Affairs reported that Wisconsin Air National Guard personnel had transported a recovered section of Marge from Papua New Guinea to the United States aboard a KC-135. The department’s announcement documents that transfer. It describes a section, not the recovery of an intact aircraft.
Identification, recovery and exhibition are separate stages. Each requires its own documentation, and none should be silently substituted for another. A fragment can carry a strong historical connection without resembling a complete aeroplane.
Marge’s significance now rests partly in those distinctions: between a person and an airframe, a remembered image and identifying evidence, a local site and an international project. Preserving them makes space for Malone’s survival and Papua New Guinean participation alongside Bong’s better-known career. The result is a fuller history of how a wartime aircraft was lost, recognised and brought into a new chapter of public memory.
